Starting on or around Tuesday, May 23, 2017, the Corporation of Shepherdstown will begin replacing the entire water metering system.  This program is being done due to the age of the existing system and RLDWA (Reduction of Lead in Drinking Water Act). This process may take approximately 60 business days to complete. As a customer, you will experience a brief loss of service during your meter installation. If there is an issue with your meter replacement the loss of service may be longer. For most customers, your water meter is outside, and all work can be done outside and therefore you will not need to be present. If your meter is inside, you will be contacted so an appointment can be made to gain access to your water meter. All certified water meter installers will be uniformed and carry photo identification. Thanks for your patience. If you have any questions, please call the Shepherdstown Water Department at 304-876-2394.

Thank you.

EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY

NEW POLICY FOR GLASS RECYCLING

Due to a national trend that is now affecting Shepherdstown, the state of West Virginia along with Apple Valley Recycling Center, Shepherdstown’s recycling vendor, can no longer accept glass of any color.  According to a source at Apple Valley Recycling Center, recycled glass is no longer in demand.  Unfortunately, this trend has been moving toward a reduction or elimination of glass the last several years, according to Frank Welch, Public Works Director.

West Virginia is not the only state that has lost its market for recycling glass.  Our closest neighbors, Maryland and Virginia, have also lost their market.

What does this mean for Shepherdstown?

Effective immediately, the Corporation of Shepherdstown and Apple Valley Waste Recycling Center require that glass no longer be placed in the recycling bins.  They now must be included with the regular trash pick up.

We apologize and are disheartened by this change.  The Corporation is exploring alternatives for the town’s glass products.  Thank you for your compliance.  If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please call:
