During the past weeks, the community of Shepherdstown has made difficult and lifesaving decisions that have been needed to help combat the spread of the COVID-19.  In the midst of this global crisis, we can reward ourselves by taking a self-guided tour through our town.  Please visit our parks, the garden behind Knutti, the historic graveyards on High Street, and the scenic Potomac while maintaining physical distancing.  The view from Rumsey Monument is spectacular.  After your meanderings, you may want to visit one of our eateries for a meal to go.  We must encourage patrons, landlords, vendors, and those providing essential services to support our business community in their struggle to survive.   Their future success is integral to the eclectic nature of Shepherdstown.

As you may have noticed, our beloved library has had a facelift by replacing crumbling bricks and repointing failing mortar joints.  It will be receiving a new roof and a new coat paint in the upcoming weeks.  The expenditures were approved more than a year ago and postponement would have resulted in further deterioration and added expense.

The town wishes to thank all the volunteers in the community that have provided masks and sanitizer to our water, sewer and police departments to This collective effort is paramount to providing for their safety while performing important services.

Our trash pickup and recycling schedule is being maintained to continue the cleanliness of the town.  Spring Clean-Up is scheduled for May 4 – 8. Please remember to fill out your census (https://www.census.gov/) to ensure that our community’s allocation of funding and grants are accurate.

The Shepherdstown community applauds our residents and volunteer organizations that take pride in making positive contributions in helping to cope with this global crisis.  We must continue to be calm and positive and follow the CDC protocol.  Thanks to all of us, be safe!

The Shepherdstown Water Department has scheduled its annual fire hydrant flushing program to begin on April 13, 2020 through May 13, 2020.  During this time, customers may experience lower than normal pressures, as well as water that is cloudy in appearance. This should correct itself as we progress throughout the system. This is an important maintenance task that must be completed, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to our customers. Questions should be directed to Charles Coe, Chief Water Plant Operator, at 304-876-2394.

To prevent the spread of COVID-19, Shepherdstown has closed its parks to all high congestion traffic and use areas such as playgrounds, basketball courts and pavilions.  Please enjoy the other open spaces in the parks with enacted and recommended guidelines.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Shepherdstown will hold its meetings online via Zoom.  Every effort will be made for public access to the meetings.  Thank you for your cooperation as we move forward in this trying time.  Meeting information regarding scheduling will be provided on the Town's website and Facebook page.  Information regarding the COVID-19 can also be found on the Town's website and Facebook page.  If you are unable to locate needed information, please contact Town Hall at 30-876-2312.  The Shepherdstown community often comes together for the common good.  Now we must separate for the common good.  We must do our part to help flatten the curve.  Mayor Jim Auxer

April 3, 2020

To the residents and businesses of the Shepherdstown community:

This morning the Contemporary American Theater Festival (CATF) announced its decision to reschedule its July festival. They will produce the entire repertory of six new American plays in talk theater events in July of 2021.

We support this difficult decision but given the uncertainty of the times, CATF really had no other choice.

We must all support one another as we have been doing. When states start lifting their stay-in-place policies, stores and restaurants will open up and people will start feeling confident enough to travel. I am sure that we will once again see bustling streets in downtown Shepherdstown. Perhaps not as busy this July, as is usual, but then we have a whole year to help promote CATF’s 30th season in 2021.
