The Shepherdstown Water Department has scheduled its annual fire hydrant flushing program to begin on April 19, 2021 through May 10, 2021. During this time, customers may experience lower than normal pressures, as well as water that is cloudy in appearance. This should correct itself as we progress throughout the system. This is an important maintenance task that must be completed, we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause to our customers. The Corporation of Shepherdstown is accepting applications for the position of Laborer I. Duties include, but are not limited to, general labor duties, such as garbage collection, mowing, street cleanup, assisting Water and Sanitary Departments as assigned. A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Starting salary will be commensurate with experience. A physical examination and pre-employment screenings, including a background check, are required. SPRING CLEAN-UP WEEK
MAY 3-7, 2021
PICK UP APPLIES TO TOWN RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES ONLY!!!
One pick-up truck load per residence. All items are to be placed at the regular pick-up site.
Please separate metal materials.
ACCEPTABLE FREE ITEMS: furniture, mattresses, household items, metal, and yard waste.
FULL OR PARTIALLY FULL PAINT CANS: in order to be able to put paint cans out for Spring Clean Up, you must add a product call Krud Kutter Paint Hardener which is sold at Lowes and Home Depot. A container of 3.5 ounces cost about $5.85 and will harden 2/3 gallon of paint. Please leave lids off.
• Items with Freon, such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers will be collected at a cost of $50.00 per item.
• Passenger tires (under 15”) will be collected at a cost of $5.00 per tire. Passenger tires (over 15”) will be collected at a cost of $12.00 per tire.
• Televisions will be collected at a cost of $40.00 each.
• The above-mentioned items must be reported and paid to the Billing Clerk at Town Hall, at 104 N. King Street prior to pick up.
PROHIBITED MATERIALS: propane/oil/gas tanks, compressed gas tanks, or any closed cylinders. Building materials, concrete, dirt/rock/sod, batteries, hazardous or dangerous materials, paint cans (see note above), medical/commercial waste, and electronics.

The Corporation of Shepherdstown would like to remind its' residents of the prohibition of open fires within the corporate limits per Section 7-117 Burning Ordinance as provided below:

CHAPTER 1, SECTION 7-117    BURNING ORDINANCE

It shall be unlawful for any person to burn or to permit any other person to burn on his property, any fires or combustible material within the Town limits of the Corporation of Shepherdstown, except as may be provided for and allowed by other provisions of the Code of the Corporation of Shepherdstown.

  • Open fires

No persons shall cause, suffer, allow or permit an open fire except under the following conditions:

  • When such fire is set or permission for such fire is given by the Fire Chief of the Corporation of Shepherdstown with the concurrence of the Jefferson County Health Officer:
    1. For the purpose of the elimination of a fire or health hazard which cannot be abated by any other
    2. For instruction in methods of fighting
    3. For the purpose of removing any hazardous
  • When oil or gas fired salamanders or other devices are used for heating by construction or other workers, provided no nuisance or air pollution is
  • When fires are used for outdoor cooking or other recreational purposes and no nuisance or air pollution is

 

This violation falls under the Section 7-116 “Penalties” of the Town Code.

 

 

Section 7-116 Penalties

A violation of any of the foregoing prohibitions set forth in this title shall be punishable by a fine not to exceed $100.00. Any violation continuing from day to day shall constitute separate individual violations and may be prosecuted as such. Revised October 2000 to include the following paragraph. Upon the final hearing of any proceeding to punish for an offense, if judgement is given against the accused such judgement shall include

the costs incurred by the Town, or due to any officer in that behalf, in addition to court costs of forty ($40.00) dollars and any fees required by law.
